I hired a fake boyfriend for July 4th to survive my ex showing up with his new woman—until my date pulled a move that paralyzed the entire backyard.
“Ten minutes, Ethan. You get two hundred bucks just to smile, hold my hand, and act completely obsessed with me,” I hissed, tightening my grip on his forearm as we pulled into my parents’ gravel driveway in suburban Ohio. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Across the lawn, surrounded by American flags and smoking barbecue grills, stood Mark—my ex-fiancé who had walked out on me six months ago—and the woman he had abandoned me for, Chloe. She was currently wearing a smug, glossy smile while adjusting Mark’s collar in front of my entire extended family.
“Relax, Maya,” Ethan murmured, his smooth baritone instantly cutting through my panic. He adjusted his leather watch strap, giving me a confident, killer smirk that looked dangerously real. “You hired a professional. By the time this fireworks display starts, your ex will wish he’d never been born.”
We stepped out into the humid July heat. The moment Ethan wrapped a heavy, protective arm around my waist, conversation across the patio died instantly. My uncle stopped mid-flip with his spatula. Mark turned around, a condescending smirk already forming on his lips as he prepared to introduce Chloe—until his eyes locked onto Ethan’s face.
The color drained from Mark’s face so fast I thought he was having a stroke. The beer bottle in his hand slipped, shattering onto the concrete patio with a deafening crash that echoed across the dead-silent yard. Chloe gasped, grabbing Mark’s arm, but he completely ignored her, staring at Ethan with wide, terror-filled eyes. Ethan didn’t flinch. He walked us straight toward Mark, leaned in close, and whispered a single sentence into Mark’s ear that made my ex drop straight to his knees right on the grass.
My breath hitched as Mark collapsed before us, his hands trembling violently against the lawn. Something massive was happening right in front of me, and it had nothing to do with the fake romance I had paid for.
“Get up, Mark! What is wrong with you?” Chloe shrieked, pulling frantically on her boyfriend’s arm while my entire family froze in utter shock. My mother dropped a platter of deviled eggs onto the outdoor table, her eyes darting frantically between Mark, Ethan, and me.
Mark was sweating profusely, his jaw working helplessly as he stared up at Ethan like he was looking at a ghost. Ethan remained entirely calm, his hand still resting comfortably and possessively over my hip, though his dark eyes were cold as ice.
“Ethan… please,” Mark choked out, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate fear I had never heard in the four years we were together. “Not here. Not in front of everyone.”
“You lost the right to ask for mercy the day you decided to play dirty,” Ethan replied softly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent yard.
I pulled back slightly, my mind racing. “Ethan, what’s going on? Do you two know each other?”
Ethan looked down at me, his expression softening just enough to give me a gentle, reassuring nod. “Your ex didn’t just leave you for another woman, Maya. He left you because he got caught stealing three hundred thousand dollars from his last investment firm.”
A collective gasp echoed across the patio. Chloe stepped back, her mouth hanging open as her face turned pale. “What? Mark, what is he talking about?”
“Shut up, Chloe!” Mark snapped, trying to scramble to his feet, but Ethan effortlessly stepped forward, towering over him with terrifying authority.
“He thought changing cities and jumping into a new relationship would hide the paper trail,” Ethan continued, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a sleek black leather wallet. He flipped it open, revealing a glittering gold badge alongside a federal identification card. “I’m not an actor, Maya. I’m a special agent with the Financial Crimes Task Force. And your cousin Sarah didn’t hire me off a talent app—she called my office three weeks ago when she realized Mark was trying to drain your joint savings account.”
The yard erupted into chaos. My dad started marching over with his fists clenched, while Chloe began screaming at Mark, realizing her lavish lifestyle was built on stolen funds. Mark panicked, lunging sideways to dash toward the driveway, but Ethan reacted with lightning speed. He swept Mark’s legs out from under him, forcing him face-down onto the grass and securing his wrists behind his back before anyone could even process the move.
Yet as Ethan clicked the handcuffs into place, Mark turned his face out of the dirt and laughed hysterically, glaring up at me with dark satisfaction. “You think you won, Maya? Check your bank account right now! It’s already gone!”
My blood ran cold. The chaos around us instantly blurred into a muffled buzz as Mark’s sinister words echoed in my ears. I pulled out my phone with trembling hands, my thumb frantically opening my banking application. My heart hammered against my chest like a sledgehammer. Every single cent of my life savings—money I had spent five years saving for a house down payment—read exactly zero.
“You miserable bastard!” my father roared, charging forward, but my uncle held him back as neighbors began peering over the wooden fences.
Ethan didn’t panic. He pulled Mark up by his collar, keeping a firm grip on his cuffed wrists, and looked at me with absolute composure. “Maya, check the transaction history. Look at the timestamp and the receiving account.”
I refreshed the screen, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. A line item showed a transfer of seventy-five thousand dollars executed just twenty minutes ago—right as I had been driving into the neighborhood. The recipient account was labeled with a routing number I didn’t recognize.
“He initiated an emergency wire transfer from your shared old account right before he walked into this party,” Ethan explained calmly, pulling a sleek tablet from his cross-body bag and tapping the screen with one hand. “He thought that once the money hit an offshore account in Belize, it would be untraceable. But what Mark doesn’t know is that we froze all his flagged external routes two days ago.”
Mark’s smug laughter abruptly cut short. He glared at Ethan, his eyes darting frantically. “What are you talking about? The transfer went through! It showed completed!”
“It went through directly into a federal escrow recovery fund,” Ethan said, a satisfied smirk finally appearing on his face. He turned the tablet screen toward me. A real-time notification displayed my account name with the full balance restored, alongside an official confirmation of a full security freeze on Mark’s assets. “Your money is completely safe, Maya. In fact, because he executed that illegal transfer across state lines today, he just added a federal wire fraud charge to his existing grand larceny indictment.”
Chloe burst into tears, dropping her designer handbag into the grass and backing away from Mark as if he were poisonous. “You told me you were a senior partner! You told me you owned that firm!” she sobbed, turning around and sprinting toward her car, leaving Mark entirely on his own.
Two unmarked black sedans pulled up onto the curb, sirens flashing quietly. Two uniform federal officers stepped out, taking custody of Mark, who was now weeping openly, begging my parents for forgiveness as he was marched toward the squad car. Nobody in my family said a word; they just watched in stunned silence as the man who had broken my heart was loaded into the back seat.
Once the police car drove away, a heavy, peaceful quiet settled over the backyard. My mother walked over, wiping a tear from her eye, and wrapped me in a tight hug before turning to Ethan with immense gratitude. “Agent… or Ethan… I don’t even know what to call you, but thank you for protecting my daughter.”
“Just Ethan is fine, Mrs. Miller,” he replied respectfully, shaking my dad’s hand as my family slowly headed back toward the patio to process everything that had just happened.
I stood near the edge of the lawn, clutching my phone, still trying to process the wild whirlwind of the past hour. Ethan walked back over to me, stepping into the shade of the tall oak tree.
“I’m sorry for keeping you in the dark, Maya,” he said softly, his voice dropping into that warm, genuine tone I had heard in the car earlier. “Your cousin Sarah was terrified Mark was going to ruin you financially before we could catch him red-handed. We needed him to feel completely confident today so he would make a desperate move on his phone while at the party.”
“So… the fake boyfriend story? The two hundred dollars?” I asked, a slight smile breaking through my shock.
Ethan laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Sarah thought telling you I was a hire-a-date actor was the only way you’d let a stranger walk into a tense family event with you without suspecting a full-blown federal investigation.” He reached into his pocket, pulled out the two-hundred-dollar envelope I had given him in the car, and placed it back into my hand. “I can’t take this. But…”
He paused, looking down at me with an undeniably real spark in his eyes. “If you’re ever ready to go to a Fourth of July party with a guy who isn’t pretending, and who actually wants to be there with you… I’d love to take you out on a real date.”
I looked at the envelope, then up at him, the weight of the past six months finally lifting off my shoulders. “Only if you promise no handcuffs next time.”
Ethan grinned softly. “Deal.”
