“Cancel her ticket. Leave her here,” my mother coldly told the airline agent at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Five minutes earlier, my sister Chloe had accused me of stealing her diamond necklace—a lie designed to destroy my chance of attending my dream art exhibition in Milan. My parents believed her instantly. My father grabbed my handbag, taking my iPhone, passport, and wallet. Then my mother canceled my boarding pass.
Without hearing a word from me, the three of them disappeared through security, leaving me completely stranded in France.
Tears filled my eyes as panic took over. I had no money, no phone, no passport, and no way to contact anyone.
“Excuse me, miss. Are you alright?”
I turned and saw a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit. His sharp blue eyes and commanding presence were unmistakable.
Julian Vance—the notorious American tech billionaire whose face appeared on every major business magazine.
“My family… they took everything and left,” I whispered.
Julian glanced toward security before looking back at me.
“They booked a private charter to Milan, didn’t they?”
I nodded.
He pulled a sleek satellite phone from his jacket and handed it to me.
“My private jet is on the tarmac. We can reach Milan before their commercial flight lands.”
I stared at him. “Why would you help me?”
His expression hardened with sudden purpose.
“Because I need a fake fiancée for a multi-billion-dollar luxury estate deal in Italy tonight.”
I froze.
“In exchange, I’ll give you complete financial protection, an unlimited expense account, and a front-row seat to watch your family crawl back to you.”
He leaned closer.
“Pretend you’re my wife. Trust me… they’ll regret this.”
I looked toward the security checkpoint where my family had vanished.
Everything in me screamed to walk away. But I had nothing left to lose.
Vengeance burned hotter than fear.
I took a breath and placed my hand in his.
Stepping onto Julian’s Gulfstream G650 felt like entering a different universe. Soft leather seats, dimmed ambient lighting, and an attentive crew met us immediately. Within ten minutes, Julian’s personal security team had bypassed European customs, issued me a temporary diplomatic transit paper, and provided a brand-new iPhone linked to an uncapped black account.
“Why me, Julian?” I asked, sipping sparkling water as the jet climbed into the night sky. “You could hire any Hollywood actress to play your fiancée.”
Julian set his glass down, his expression hardening. “Because my business partner in Milan, Count Alessandro, only deals with family-oriented legacy owners. My ex-fiancée leaked company secrets to the press last week, threatening a three-billion-dollar merger. I need someone real, someone who is genuinely hurt, and someone who won’t betray me.”
He paused, staring intently at me. “Besides, I know exactly who your father is. Arthur Miller, right? He’s been desperately begging my venture capital firm for a fifty-million-dollar bailout for his failing logistics company. He thinks I’m meeting him in Milan tomorrow to sign the deal.”
My jaw dropped. The cruel father who had just abandoned me at the airport was walking straight into Julian’s trap without even knowing it.
Two hours later, we arrived at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo overlooking Lake Como. Julian had his team dress me in a stunning emerald-green silk gown and a diamond necklace that outshone anything my sister Chloe had ever dreamed of owning. As we walked into the grand ballroom for Count Alessandro’s private gala, the room fell dead silent. Cameras flashed instantly.
And then, I saw them.
My parents and Chloe were standing near the champagne fountain, looking exhausted from their commercial flight and delay. Chloe was smirking, wearing the very necklace she accused me of stealing.
Suddenly, the host cleared his throat. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome our key investor, Mr. Julian Vance, and his new wife, Mrs. Vance!”
My father almost choked on his drink. Chloe’s glass shattered on the marble floor as her mouth fell open in absolute horror. They stared at me in total disbelief as Julian wrapped a heavy, possessive arm around my waist, pulling me close.
My father pushed through the crowd, his face pale and furious. “What is the meaning of this?! Nora? How are you here?! Julian, this girl is an ungrateful thief who—”
“Watch your tone, Arthur,” Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that chilled the room. “You are speaking to the co-owner of Vance Global. And as of five minutes ago, I officially bought out your company’s primary debt.”
My father gasped, stumbling back. But before I could enjoy the victory, Julian leaned into my ear and whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“Don’t look now, Nora, but the man standing behind your sister isn’t an art collector. He’s an international broker who just bought your family’s stolen assets—including the secret diary your father hid from you.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine as Julian’s words sank in. I glanced past Chloe toward the shadowed balcony, where a sharp-featured man in a dark velvet suit was discreetly slipping a leather-bound journal into his coat pocket. I recognized that notebook instantly. It was my late grandmother’s personal journal—the one containing the original patent designs for a revolutionary eco-friendly shipping fuel that my family built their entire business empire upon.
All my life, my parents told me Grandmother left her estate entirely to Chloe. But looking at my father’s terrified expression, the truth suddenly hit me like a lightning strike. They hadn’t just abandoned me at the airport because of a petty argument; they needed me out of the picture because I was turning twenty-five at midnight—the exact age when Grandmother’s real trust fund was legally set to unlock.
“Julian,” I whispered, clutching his arm, “they didn’t just ruin my trip. They stole my inheritance.”
“I know,” Julian replied calmly, a subtle smile touching his lips. “Why do you think I was waiting at Charles de Gaulle?”
My eyes widened in shock. “You planned this?”
“I knew your father was desperate enough to sell the patent to an offshore syndicate tonight,” Julian explained smoothly as we began walking toward the balcony. “I couldn’t intervene directly without legal authority. But as my legal spouse, you now have access to Vance Global’s top intelligence and legal network. I didn’t rescue you by chance, Nora. I chose you because it was time you took back what belongs to you.”
Before my father could comprehend what was happening, Julian raised his hand, signaling the hotel security and two uniformed Italian officers stationed at the entrance. The officers marched straight past the wealthy guests and blocked my father and the dark-suited broker from exiting the balcony.
“Arthur Miller,” the lead officer declared in crisp English, “you are under investigation for grand larceny, trust fraud, and the illegal transfer of stolen intellectual property.”
“This is insane!” Chloe shrieked, stepping forward. “Nora is lying! She’s a nobody! She stole my necklace!”
“Actually, Chloe,” I said, stepping forward with total calm and confidence, “the security footage from the airport terminal has already been reviewed. The footage clearly shows you planting that necklace in my bag before your mother took it back out. It’s already been forwarded to the police.”
Chloe’s face turned bright red, and she burst into frantic tears as my mother grabbed my arm, her voice shaking with desperate greed. “Nora, honey, please! We’re family! Tell them it’s a misunderstanding! Talk to your husband!”
I gently brushed her hand off my sleeve, looking her straight in the eye without a single drop of hesitation left in my heart. “You canceled my ticket and threw me away like trash in a foreign country. You aren’t my family anymore.”
Within minutes, the police escorted my father and the broker out of the grand ballroom in handcuffs, while Chloe and my mother were escorted off the property in complete humiliation, thoroughly blacklisted from every luxury establishment in Europe.
As the noise faded and the guests returned to their conversations, Julian and I walked out onto the quiet terrace overlooking Lake Como. The cool night breeze blew gently across the water, but for the first time in my life, I felt completely safe and free.
“So,” Julian said, leaning against the stone railing and looking down at me with genuine warmth, “Mrs. Vance… the inheritance is legally yours, your family’s debt is cleared from your name, and your art exhibition in Milan opens tomorrow morning. What’s your next move?”
I looked at the billionaire who had turned my worst night into my greatest victory. “I think I’d like to stay married a little longer,” I smiled.
Julian laughed softly, taking my hand in his. “That can definitely be arranged.”
