“Get your worthless trash out of my house!”
My mother screamed as my suitcase hit the rain-soaked porch of our Chicago home. Behind her, my younger sister, Chloe, smirked, holding an offer letter from Apex Global Dynamics, North America’s leading tech conglomerate.
“Chloe has a real future,” Dad sneered. “She’s got a job at Apex. You’ve wasted two years doing nothing but leeching off us. Get out!”
The door slammed in my face.
Standing in the freezing rain, I almost laughed. My family thought I’d been lazy, spending endless nights on my laptop. They never knew the truth: I’d spent three years secretly building Apex Global Dynamics from a tiny garage startup into a multimillion-dollar empire. I was its founder and owner.
The next morning, I walked into Apex headquarters wearing a tailored charcoal suit. The glass doors opened, employees hurried past, and I headed toward the executive elevator.
Then a familiar voice rang through the lobby.
“Look who came crawling in from the rain!”
Chloe stood near reception in her new corporate outfit, sipping an iced latte. She’d barely started her first day and was already acting like she owned the place.
“Did Mom and Dad finally kick you out?” she mocked loudly. “Are you here begging for a receptionist job? This is Apex, not some charity. Security will drag you out if you don’t leave!”
I calmly adjusted my jacket cuffs.
“I didn’t come here to beg, Chloe.”
She laughed, drawing the attention of everyone nearby.
I met her eyes and delivered my next words without raising my voice.
“I fired you ten minutes ago. Pack your desk and get out.”
Her smile vanished. The latte trembled in her hand as two corporate security officers stepped out of the executive elevator and approached us.
Chloe stared at me, unable to understand why security was following my orders.
Then the elevator doors slid open again.
Someone stepped out—someone Chloe never expected to see standing beside me. And the moment she recognized that person, her face turned deathly pale.
“Are you insane?!” Chloe screamed, her face turning bright red as the two security guards stopped directly behind me. “You’re a homeless nobody! You can’t fire me! I was hired directly by Vice President Vance!”
The lobby fell dead silent. Employees at the reception desk paused their typing. Chloe thrust her ID badge toward the head guard, her voice rising in desperation. “Escort this crazy trespasser out of the building immediately! She’s my bitter sister who got kicked out of our house yesterday!”
The head guard, Marcus, didn’t even glance at her badge. Instead, he stepped forward, bowed his head slightly toward me, and spoke in a clear, resonant tone. “Good morning, Chief Executive Officer Vance.”
Chloe froze. The latte slipped from her hand, shattering against the polished marble floor, spilling brown liquid across her pristine white heels. “C… CEO? What kind of sick prank is this?!”
“It’s no prank, Chloe,” I said coolly. “My married name is Sarah Vance. Marcus Vance, the Vice President who signed your offer letter, is my husband and co-founder.”
Before Chloe could process the revelation, the executive elevator chimed again. Marcus Vance walked out, holding a thick Manila folder. But he didn’t look happy. His face was pale, and his eyes were glued to a set of printed emails in his hand.
“Sarah,” Marcus said urgently, ignoring Chloe entirely as he approached me. “We have a massive breach. Someone leaked our flagship AI algorithm to our biggest competitor, Nexus Corp, late last night. The leak originated from the HR onboarding server right after Chloe’s profile was uploaded.”
Chloe went white as a sheet. “What?! I didn’t leak anything! I just downloaded my contract files onto a flash drive last night at home!”
“You used a flash drive on our internal network?” I stepped closer to her, my voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. “A flash drive that Dad gave you?”
Chloe stumbled backward, her mouth opening and closing without a sound. It suddenly clicked. My parents hadn’t just celebrated Chloe getting a job—my father had been secretly working as a consultant for Nexus Corp for months. They used Chloe’s blind arrogance as a trojan horse to steal my company’s core technology and destroy Apex before I could ever launch.
My phone rang in my pocket. It was my father calling. I answered on speaker.
“Sarah!” my father’s booming voice filled the quiet lobby. “Tell your sister to stop calling us crying! And you better apologize to her right now, or I’ll make sure you never find a place to live in this city!”
I smiled grimly into the microphone.
“Dad,” I said calmly, my voice projecting across the silent lobby. “You might want to check your front porch.”
“What are you talking about, you arrogant brat?” my father snorted through the speaker. “We threw your junk out yesterday. Don’t think you can play games with us!”
“I’m not playing games,” I replied. “Federal agents from the corporate espionage task force should be pulling into your driveway right about now. You see, the flash drive you gave Chloe to plug into our company servers was loaded with a tracking script. Every single file you copied onto your personal laptop last night was logged, timestamped, and transmitted directly to the FBI.”
The line went dead silent. On the other end of the phone, I could faintly hear the distant sound of blaring police sirens approaching our family home in the suburbs.
“Sarah… what did you do?” my father’s voice trembled, all the booming authority instantly drained out of him. “Chloe said she was working for a luxury tech firm…”
“She was,” I said softly. “She was working for my firm. I am the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Apex Global Dynamics. The company you just tried to rob belongs entirely to the daughter you threw out into the rain.”
A loud bang echoed through the receiver as federal officers breached the front door of my parents’ house, followed by the muffled shouting of agents ordering my father to get on the ground. My mother started shrieking in the background, begging for mercy, before the call abruptly cut off.
Chloe fell to her knees right there on the cold marble floor, surrounded by spilled coffee and broken glass. Tears streaked through her heavy makeup as she looked up at me, grabbing the hem of my suit trousers.
“Sarah, please!” Chloe sobbed hysterically. “I didn’t know! Dad told me it was just a background check tool! He said it would guarantee my high salary! Please tell security to let me go! We’re sisters!”
I stepped back, pulling my suit trouser away from her trembling fingers.
“When I was sleeping on the floor, working eighteen hours a day to build this life, you called me a parasite,” I said, looking down at her without a trace of pity. “When Mom and Dad threw my luggage into the mud yesterday, you smiled and locked the door behind me. You were happy to watch me freeze as long as you got to feel superior.”
Marcus Vance tapped the screen of his tablet and showed it to me. “The FBI has secured the primary servers at Nexus Corp. The stolen data has been retrieved, and their board of directors is stepping down. Our company is completely secure.”
“Good,” I said, nodding to the head of security. “Marcus, please escort my former sister off the premises and hand her over to the authorities waiting outside for questioning.”
“No! Sarah, please! Mom and Dad will go to prison! I’ll have nothing!” Chloe screamed as two heavy guards lifted her by her arms and dragged her kicking toward the revolving glass doors.
An hour later, I stood in my top-floor corner office, looking out over the Chicago skyline as the rain clouds finally began to part, letting rays of golden sunlight wash over the city. My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was a text message from my mother sent from a holding cell at the precinct.
Sarah, please help us. We didn’t know it was your company. We are your parents. You owe us everything we gave you growing up. Please drop the charges.
I typed back a single response: It is futile to keep toxic people in my life. Good luck.
I blocked the number, locked my phone, and turned back to my desk to sign the expansion contracts for our new global offices. I was no longer the quiet daughter waiting for approval in the shadow of my family. I was the ruler of my own empire, and nobody would ever throw me out again.
