My heart plummeted into my stomach. I rushed up the stairs and threw my weight against the door, but the deadbolt was firmly engaged.
“Mark! Open this door right now!” I demanded, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay calm.
“I don’t think so, sweetheart,” Mark’s voice replied from the other side, devoid of any warmth he had shown me over the last four years. “You were always too curious for your own good. I saw the network traffic spikes on my phone twenty minutes ago. You accessed the hidden drive, didn’t you?”
“I saw everything,” I yelled, hitting the wood with my palm. “I saw what you and Chloe did to my mother! I saw what you stole from my dad! You’re insane if you think you’re getting away with this!”
A cold laugh echoed through the door. “Getting away with it? Sarah, look around you. You’re locked in a basement with no cell signal—yes, I turned on the signal jammer in the hallway. By tomorrow morning, Chloe and I will have the final signatures notarized. As for you, well… a sudden nervous breakdown after discovering your mother’s severe dementia will explain why you need to be admitted to a private facility for treatment.”
Footsteps walked away. I stood on the top step, breathing heavily, trying to quell the rising wave of panic. He was right about one thing: my cell phone showed zero bars. The jammer was active.
I turned around and looked down into the shadowy basement. I couldn’t afford to break down now. My mother was upstairs alone with a monster, and time was running out.
I headed back down to the workbench. I grabbed a heavy iron crowbar from the tool rack and pried open the metal lockbox. Inside were stacks of bank statements, offshore wire transfers, and forged probate documents bearing my father’s forged signature—alongside Chloe’s notary stamp. But right at the bottom, I found something even more crucial: a duplicate key to the exterior storm cellar doors that led from the basement directly out to the backyard.
My hands trembled as I grabbed the key and unlocked the heavy wooden doors at the far end of the basement. Pushing them open, I crawled out into the chilly night air.
Instead of running away, I circled around to the side of the house. I knew the house’s main electrical breaker panel was located outdoors near the garage. Using the edge of the crowbar, I flipped the main breaker, instantly plunging the entire house into pitch blackness. The signal jammer cut out immediately.
Inside, I heard Mark shout in confusion. I whipped out my phone, immediately dialing 911, and gave the dispatcher our address, reporting a domestic home invasion and elder abuse in progress. Then, I dialed another number—Detective Miller, a close friend of my late father who worked for the Austin Police Department.
“Sarah? What’s going on at this hour?” Miller answered, his voice groggy.
“Detective, I need you at my house right now,” I said, my voice steady and firm. “My husband and his sister have been embezzling my father’s estate, abusing my mother, and they just attempted to lock me in the basement. I have video proof and paper evidence.”
Within ten minutes, red and blue lights flashed down our quiet residential street.
Mark and Chloe had come downstairs with flashlights, frantically trying to figure out the power outage, when the front door was kicked open by responding officers. I walked in from the back door, holding the evidence folder tight against my chest.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Mark yelled, stepping back as officers pointed their flashlights at him. “Officer, my wife is having a psychotic episode! She cut the power!”
“Save it, Mark,” Detective Miller said, stepping through the front doorway with two armed officers behind him. “Sarah sent over the video files five minutes ago while we were en route. We saw the footage of you twisting Helen’s arm.”
Mark’s face drained of all color. He spun around to look at Chloe, but his sister was already backing away, trying to distance herself from him.
“She made me do it!” Chloe stammered, pointing at Mark. “It was his idea! He forged the documents!”
“Shut up, Chloe!” Mark roared, turning on her.
“Both of you, put your hands behind your back!” the officer commanded, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.
As the officers cuffed Mark, he turned to stare at me, his eyes wide with shock and fury. “Sarah… please. We can talk about this. I did it for us, for our future!”
“Our future ended the moment you laid a hand on my mother,” I said, stepping past him to go to Mom’s room.
I sat beside Mom on her bed, wrapping a warm blanket around her shoulders as the police escorted Mark and Chloe out to the patrol cars. Mom looked at me, her eyes filled with tears once again, but this time, they were tears of relief.
“It’s over, Mom,” I whispered, holding her hand tightly. “They will never touch you again.”
Three months later, Mark and Chloe were convicted of grand larceny, elder abuse, and extortion, facing long federal prison sentences. Dad’s estate was fully recovered, ensuring Mom received the finest medical care in the comfort of our home. They thought they had trapped us in a web of fear, but in the end, their own greed was their undoing.
