The silence in the ballroom was deafening as Ethan’s world shattered into pieces within seconds. He took a staggering step back, his eyes darting between the security guards, the damning evidence on the screen, and the cold stare of every influential figure in the city.
“Julianna, please,” he stammered, his voice trembling as he reached out toward me with shaking hands. “We’re married! We can fix this in private! Think about our family, think about everything we built together!”
“We built nothing together, Ethan,” I replied, my voice steady and completely devoid of emotion. “I built Titan Holdings long before I met you. When I married you, I believed in your integrity. I supported your dreams because I wanted you to feel equal, not overshadowed. I chose to stay in the background so you could shine on your own merit. But you mistook my modesty for weakness.”
Six years ago, before Ethan ever submitted his first application to Titan, I was already managing its growth alongside my father, the late founder. When my father passed, I took control of the parent company while keeping my name off public filings to maintain privacy. When Ethan joined the firm as a low-level analyst, I never pulled strings for him. I let him work his way up.
However, two years ago, I noticed irregularities in his department’s financial reports. I wanted to believe it was a mistake, but deep down, I knew I needed to investigate. That was when I authorized Arthur to initiate a confidential audit. The results were worse than I imagined: Ethan wasn’t just incompetent; he was actively stealing, using my proprietary trading strategies to cover his shortfalls while claiming my intellectual property as his own creation to secure his upward mobility.
And tonight was supposed to be his ultimate triumph—the night he publicly pushed me aside to bring his mistress into the spotlight.
“You brought Chloe to this table tonight to humiliate me,” I said, pointing to the trembling woman who was currently trying to hide behind the security detail. “You wanted to show everyone that I was disposable. You wanted to make sure I knew my place as a quiet, compliant wife while you enjoyed the wealth and power that I created.”
“I was wrong, Jules! Please!” Ethan fell to his knees on the polished floor, completely weeping in front of three hundred people he had spent years trying to impress. “I’ll transfer everything back! I’ll resign! Just don’t press charges!”
Arthur Vance stepped forward, holding a thick leather folder containing signed court orders.
“It’s too late for that, Ethan,” Arthur declared firmly. “Ten minutes ago, Federal investigators froze all bank accounts associated with your name, including the offshore shell company. The board of directors has unanimously voted to terminate your employment effective immediately, for cause.”
Two federal agents entered through the main doors, walking straight down the aisle toward Ethan. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed clearly across the room as they secured his wrists behind his back.
Ethan looked up at me, his eyes filled with genuine terror and regret, but there was no pity left in my heart.
“Your career is over, Ethan,” I said softly, looking down at him. “And so is our marriage. The divorce papers are already served to your attorney.”
As the agents led a sobbing Ethan out of the hall alongside a hysterical Chloe, the room remained dead silent. I walked up to the podium, picked up the microphone, and turned to face the distinguished audience.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, a subtle smile finally gracing my face. “I apologize for the interruption. Now, let’s officially begin tonight’s gala.”
The entire hall burst into a standing ovation. As I sat down at the head of the VIP table, surrounded by loyal colleagues and genuine respect, I took a sip of my champagne, completely free from the shadow of the man who thought he could erase me.
