Julian stumbled backward, his back hitting the marble pillar as he looked between the attorneys, Leo, and me. “Served? Served for what? This is my house! You can’t just walk in here!”
“Actually, Mr. Vance, this property is registered under Vance Global Securities,” the lead attorney stated smoothly, pulling out a legal notice. “As of eight o’clock this morning, all operational authority of Vance Global Securities has been transferred directly to Mr. Leo Vance following the formal verification of his marriage and full mental competency by a court-appointed panel of independent physicians.”
Julian turned pale, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “Competency? He’s spent his whole life in treatment!”
“Treatment that was deliberately mismanaged to suppress his legal rights,” I said, stepping forward. “When Julian brought me to this house two years ago, he thought I was just another naive girl impressed by his family’s money. But my background is in forensic healthcare administration. It didn’t take long to realize that Leo wasn’t born with a severe cognitive disability. He was being systematically poisoned with high-dose neuroleptics prescribed by a doctor paid directly out of your father’s private account.”
Leo took my hand, his grip warm and steady. “For six months, Sarah subtly swapped my medication with harmless supplements while documenting every single transaction your father made. When your father passed away last year, you inherited the scheme. You kept paying off the doctor to keep me sedated because you knew that if I ever woke up, the entire fortune would revert to me.”
“You… you traitorous little bitch!” Julian screamed, lunging toward me.
Before he could take two steps, two security officers stepped in front of Leo, grabbing Julian’s arms and forcing him back.
“Don’t make this worse for yourself, Julian,” Leo said quietly, his tone devoid of anger, carrying only absolute authority. “The federal marshals are already auditing the offshore accounts you opened with Chloe Sterling. We know you siphoned six million dollars from the corporate charity fund to pay for your luxury trip and cover her family’s failing real estate debts.”
Julian panicked, his arrogant facade completely shattering. “Leo… Leo, please! We’re brothers! You can’t do this to me! Dad told me it was for the good of the company! I was just doing what he told me to do!”
“You left me in a locked room for half my life, Julian,” Leo replied, looking at his brother with a mixture of pity and quiet disdain. “And three days ago, you tried to throw Sarah away like trash, using me as a disposable scapegoat so you could run off with another woman’s money. You didn’t care about the company, and you certainly didn’t care about family.”
The attorney handed Julian a red-stamped folder. “You have thirty minutes to collect your personal effects from the guest quarters. Your corporate credit cards have been frozen, your access privileges revoked, and an injunction has been filed to prevent you from coming within five hundred feet of this estate or any office of Vance Global Securities.”
“Thirty minutes?!” Julian yelled, his voice cracking. “Where am I supposed to go? I don’t have anything!”
“You can call Chloe,” I suggested softly. “Though I doubt she’ll pick up considering her father’s company was served with a co-conspirator subpoena twenty minutes ago.”
Julian stared at us, utterly defeated, his face drained of all color. The security guards escorted him upstairs to pack his things, his heavy footsteps echoing through the silent mansion.
Leo turned to me, a real, genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in years. The quiet strength in his eyes was blinding.
“It’s over,” he whispered softly, lifting my hand to his lips. “We actually did it.”
“It’s just beginning,” I corrected, smiling back as I looked around the magnificent foyer that was finally free of lies.
Julian had spent his whole life playing chess with people’s lives, treating everyone around him as disposable pieces. But he forgot the simplest rule of the game: sometimes, the piece you leave behind in the dark is the one that takes the king.
