I brought white roses and a teddy bear to surprise my pregnant daughter. When she opened the door, she was bleeding. Her husband said she had fallen. Then she slipped a key into my hand and whispered, “Laundry room. Blue tin. Before they find it.” He reached for my fist before the ambulance arrived.
“Dad, don’t let him take me upstairs.”
My daughter whispered it through the six-inch opening of her front door. Then her knees buckled.
I dropped the white roses and caught her before her head struck the frame. The teddy bear with the yellow bow landed beside her bare feet.
Eight months pregnant. Blood on her sleeve. A dark bruise circling her wrist.
“Claire. Look at me.”
Her husband appeared behind her.
“She’s having another episode,” Ethan said. “Give her to me.”
I pulled out my phone.
“Call an ambulance,” Claire whispered.
Ethan reached for it.
I stepped backward, holding her against my chest.
“Touch this phone and I’ll tell the dispatcher exactly why.”
His mother came down the hallway carrying Claire’s purse.
“Robert, you’re frightening her. She needs quiet.”
My daughter gripped my jacket.
“Not upstairs.”
I gave the dispatcher the address.
Ethan’s expression changed when I said my daughter was bleeding.
“She fell,” he announced loudly. “Make sure you tell them she fell.”
I hadn’t asked how she got hurt.
While we waited, Claire pressed something into my palm: a small brass key.
“Laundry room,” she breathed. “Blue tin. Before they find it.”
His mother stopped walking.
Ethan stared at my closed fist.
Outside, a siren grew louder.
Then Claire looked past me toward the teddy bear on the porch.
“Dad,” she whispered, “I didn’t send those messages.”
Her eyes closed.
And Ethan lunged for the key.
I thought the key would explain what had happened inside that house. I hadn’t understood why Ethan was more afraid of it than the ambulance.
The rest of what happened is in the comments. I finished the story in the comments. Next part is under this post.
