Part 3

Sirens wailed in the near distance, echoing through the canyon toward the country club gates.

Julian stood frozen on the wet stones, staring at the wax-sealed envelope in Clara’s hand. The smug superiority that had defined his entire personality for thirty years seemed to crack all at once. “That’s impossible,” Julian whispered, laughing nervously as he looked at his mother. “Mom, tell her. Mark was the black sheep. He vanished five years ago after Dad died. He didn’t inherit anything!”

Julian’s mother looked away, unable to meet her favorite son’s eyes.

“He didn’t inherit it, Julian,” Clara said, stepping between him and me. “He built it. While you were burning through your inheritance leasing luxury cars and pretending to be a tech venture capitalist, Mark was buying defaulted logistics real estate in Dallas and Atlanta. He bought your company’s corporate lease when you defaulted six months ago, Julian. He’s been the anonymous landlord keeping the lights on in your office so you wouldn’t go to federal prison for bank fraud.”

A gasp ripped through the crowd. Julian’s business associates, several of whom were standing by the bar, suddenly exchanged dark glances and pulled out their phones.

“No,” Julian choked out, his chest heaving as the sirens grew deafening. “No, he hated me! Why would he do that?”

“Because Dad made me promise on his deathbed that I would never let you hit rock bottom,” I said, voice strained as paramedic uniforms broke through the garden gate. “Dad knew what you were. He knew you were reckless, arrogant, and cruel. But he begged me to keep a safety net under you.”

Two paramedics rushed to my side, immediately stabilizing my neck and cutting the drenched fabric off my shoulder. The attending medic winced at the visible deformity under my skin. “We need transport right now. Compound dislocation with internal nerve impingement.”

Julian grabbed my good arm, frantic. “Mark! Look at me! Tell Clara you’re joking! Tell her this is a prank!”

“Step back, sir!” the paramedic barked, shoving Julian aside.

Clara unzipped the back of her dress train, unhooking the heavy lace overlay and dropping it onto the wet grass like garbage. She walked over to the wedding altar, picked up the public address microphone, and turned to the stunned crowd of eighty guests.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the wedding is officially canceled,” Clara’s voice boomed over the lawn speakers, clear, icy, and unwavering. “Buses will arrive in ten minutes to take you back to the resort. Dinner is packed for you to take home.”

Julian lunged toward the microphone. “Clara, stop! We can fix this! What was the condition? You said Mark set a condition!”

Clara looked at Julian with an expression devoid of any love, warmth, or pity.

“The trust agreement was finalized this morning with our estate attorneys,” Clara told him, not even bothering to lower the microphone. “Mark agreed to absorb your four-million-dollar corporate liability and hand you full title to this property free and clear. But because he knew how violent and impulsive you get when you drink, he added a behavioral nullification clause. If you committed any act of willful assault, physical malice, or domestic endangerment against any member of this family before the marriage was registered at five o’clock today, the deed reverted entirely to me—and your debt defaults immediately.”

Julian’s knees visibly buckled. “You… you tricked me.”

“You pushed him into a pool after watching his orthopedic surgeon rebuild his arm three weeks ago,” Clara replied, tossing the microphone onto the grass with a hollow thud. “You destroyed yourself, Julian. Just like you always do.”

Two county sheriff deputies jogged into the courtyard behind the paramedics. Guests immediately parted to let them through.

“Who called dispatch about an aggravated assault at this address?” the senior deputy asked, scanning the wet, chaotic scene.

Clara raised her hand without hesitating. “I did, Officer. The groom intentionally assaulted the victim from behind, causing severe reinjury to a medical implant. The incident was captured on four separate professional high-definition videography cameras positioned around this pool.”

Julian spun around to see the wedding videographer slowly lowering his gimbal, nodding solemnly toward the deputies.

“Wait! It was just a joke!” Julian screamed as the deputies grabbed his wrists and twisted his arms behind his back. “Officer, he’s my brother! We were playing around! Mark, tell them! Tell them it was an accident!”

I didn’t say a word. I looked him dead in the eyes as the paramedics lifted the gurney onto the stone pathway. There was no rage left in me, only the quiet relief of finally being free from decades of sibling cruelty and blind family loyalty.

As they wheeled me toward the flashing red lights of the ambulance, Clara walked alongside the gurney, holding my left hand. She had already pulled the diamond engagement ring off her finger and dropped it into Julian’s abandoned champagne glass on the courtyard table.

Behind us, Julian’s panicked shouts faded under the clicks of handcuffs and the murmur of guests heading for the exits. The grand wedding he tried to build on other people’s sacrifices had vanished in an instant, leaving him in the exact place he deserved: soaking wet, completely broke, and facing the consequences all alone.
