“Just die already!” my sister-in-law spat, crushing my surgical wounds beneath her heel on my wedding day. But when I whispered eight words to my fiancé, his face turned ghost white.

A heavy steel drone dropped through the ventilation shaft, hovering perfectly between Vanessa and me. Its high-definition cameras glowed with a intense blue light, projecting a holographic feed directly onto the ballroom’s massive main screen.

The face that appeared on the screen sent a shockwave through the locked hall.

It was my father, Arthur Sterling—the billionaire attorney who had supposedly died in a plane crash six months ago.

“Good evening, Vanessa. Good evening, Adrian,” Arthur’s voice boomed through the surrounding sound system, cold, calm, and utterly lethal. “Reports of my death were greatly exaggerated, manufactured precisely to see which parasites would crawl out of the woodwork to target my daughter.”

Vanessa froze, the gun trembling violently in her hand. “No… no, you’re dead! We verified the DNA!”

“You verified the DNA of a body my private security firm placed in that wreckage,” Arthur replied with a chilling smile. “Every contract, every medical form, and every bank transfer you forced Clara to engage in over the last three years was routed through my private servers. I allowed you to proceed just far enough to commit grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, organ trafficking, and treason.”

Adrian fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably. “Arthur, please! She forced me into this! Vanessa made the deal with the cartel!”

“Shut up, you coward!” Vanessa shrieked, wildly swinging her gun toward the drone and firing two shots. The bullets bounced uselessly off the reinforced frame.

Before she could pull the trigger a third time, the heavy iron shutters of the ballroom burst open with a deafening explosion. Heavy tactical gear clattered against the marble as a team of federal agents rushed the room, laser sights pinning Vanessa and Adrian to the spot.

“FBI! Drop your weapons! Hands on your head now!”

Vanessa dropped the gun, collapsing onto the floor as tactical officers swarmed her, pulling her arms behind her back and slapping cold steel cuffs onto her wrists. Adrian offered no resistance whatsoever, weeping like a child as he was slammed against the altar.

I let out a long breath, my strength completely giving out. I began to fall backward, but strong arms caught me before I hit the cold floor.

“I’ve got you, kiddo,” a deep, familiar voice whispered.

I looked up through blurred vision to see my father standing over me in person, flanked by top medical paramedics who immediately went to work stabilizing my side and stopping the bleeding.

“You took a big risk, Dad,” I murmured, offering a weak smile as they transferred me onto a gurney.

“You took a bigger one, Clara,” he said softly, kissing my forehead as tears filled his hardened eyes. “But it’s over now. Their assets are seized, their backers are being picked up by federal marshals as we speak, and you are finally free.”

As they wheeled me out of the ruined venue past the flashing police lights and stunned crowds, I looked back one last time. Adrian and Vanessa were being shoved into separate armored police vans, their grand ambitions reduced to mugshots and life sentences.

I closed my eyes, feeling the cool night air of Manhattan hit my face, knowing that the trap was finally closed, and my life was truly my own again.
