The new hire spilled hot coffee all over my silk blouse and smirked, saying her boyfriend owned the company. So I picked up the phone, called the CEO, and told him his girlfriend just made a massive mistake.
The scorching heat of fresh coffee soaked straight through my white silk blouse, burning my skin before I even had time to gasp. I staggered backward, clutching my chest, as dark brown liquid dripped onto my tailored trousers and carpet. Right in front of me stood Chloe, the newly hired marketing assistant, holding a half-empty mug. Instead of apologizing, she folded her arms, looked me up and down with disgust, and let out a cold smirk. “Oops,” she purred, her voice dripping with artificial innocence. “Maybe you should watch where you’re walking next time, sweetie.”
Before I could speak, she leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a confident whisper. “And don’t bother running to HR. My boyfriend owns this company. One word from me, and you’ll be packing your desk before lunch.”
The office lobby fell completely silent. Dozens of colleagues paused, staring in shock, waiting to see if I would burst into tears or scream. I didn’t do either. I slowly pulled a handkerchief from my pocket, dabbed the steaming stain on my collar, and pulled out my phone. Chloe chuckled, shaking her head as if amused by my audacity. “Who are you calling? The police? Go ahead, try it.”
I ignored her, dialed a familiar ten-digit number, and put the phone to my ear. It rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice answered. “Julian speaking.”
I kept my eyes locked on Chloe’s arrogant smile, keeping my tone dead pan and icy calm. “Julian, you should come down to the main lobby right now. Your girlfriend just made a very big mistake.”
On the other end, Julian went dead silent. Chloe’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but she quickly recovered, crossing her arms again and rolling her eyes. “Nice bluff,” she sneered loud enough for the crowd to hear. “Julian doesn’t take calls from low-level nobodies.”
Ten seconds later, the private executive elevator chimed. The glass doors slid open, and Julian Vance, the founder and sole owner of Vance Enterprises, stepped out into the lobby, his face pale and his jaw tightly set.
Chloe’s eyes lit up instantly. She gasped dramatically, threw her mug into a nearby trash can, and rushed toward him, squeezing her eyes shut to force out fake tears. “Baby! Thank God you’re here!” she wailed, throwing her arms around his waist. “This psycho woman threw herself into me and started threatening me! You need to fire her right now!”
Julian didn’t hug her back. Instead, his eyes swept across the lobby, past the staring employees, and landed straight on me—standing there covered in coffee. Slowly, he reached out, pushed Chloe’s hands off his body, and walked right past her toward me.
Chloe turned, her face twisting in utter confusion. “Julian? What are you doing?”
I took a step forward, looking Julian dead in the eyes as the entire lobby held its breath.
Julian stood inches away from me, his eyes dark with panic as he looked at the dark brown coffee stain ruining my shirt and skin. Chloe hurried over, grabbing his arm again, her voice rising in pitch. “Julian, why are you looking at her like that? I told you, she insulted me first! She’s lying!”
Julian slowly turned his head toward Chloe, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “Chloe… do you have any idea who this woman is?”
Chloe scoffed, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “Yeah, some low-level staff member who thinks she can talk down to me. Fire her already!”
“This is Katherine Vance,” Julian said, each word dropping like heavy ice onto the floor. “My co-founder. My elder sister. And the majority shareholder who owns sixty percent of this entire company.”
The color drained from Chloe’s face so fast she stumbled back a step. Whispers instantly erupted through the lobby like wildfire. My colleagues swapped stunned glances as the truth settled in. Chloe blinked rapidly, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Sister? But… but you never mentioned a sister! You said you owned everything!”
“Because I manage daily operations while Katherine runs our international branch,” Julian snapped, his voice sharp with anger. “Her name is on the building, Chloe. On every legal contract you signed when you were hired yesterday.”
Chloe’s arrogance shattered into pure terror. She looked at me, then at Julian, her chest heaving. “I… I didn’t know! I swear I didn’t know! It was an accident, Katherine, I promise!”
“It wasn’t an accident,” I said smoothly, stepping closer to her. “You intentionally tipped the mug toward me because I didn’t move out of your path fast enough. And then you threatened my job using my brother’s name.”
“I was just joking!” Chloe whimpered, her voice trembling now. “Please, Mr. Vance, tell her! We’re dating! You wouldn’t let her fire me over a little spilled coffee, right?”
Julian rubbed his temples, refusing to look her in the eye. “Chloe, we’ve been seeing each other for three weeks. That doesn’t give you the right to abuse employees or act like you run this firm.”
Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my hand. It was a security alert from our internal IT network. I glanced down at the screen, and my heart chilled. A flag had just been raised on Julian’s personal server account—transfers of proprietary marketing algorithms initiated less than twenty minutes ago from an unauthorized terminal in the building.
I slowly looked up from my phone, staring directly at Chloe. Her phone was peeking out of her back pocket, the screen still lit up with an active cloud-sync icon.
This was no coincidence. She hadn’t just gotten a job here by chance, and bumping into me wasn’t just a petty display of ego.
“Julian,” I said softly, turning the screen toward my brother. “Forget about the coffee. Call corporate security right now and lock down the building. Your new girlfriend didn’t come here to work. She came here to steal our core data.”
Chloe’s eyes went wide with pure panic, and she instantly reached for her bag.
The moment the words left my mouth, Chloe bolted.
She lunged toward the glass entrance doors, shoving past an astonished receptionist. But before she could reach the street, two armed corporate security guards stepped into the doorway, blocking her exit. Trapped, Chloe whirled around, her purse clutched tightly against her chest, her breathing frantic.
“Get away from me!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. “You can’t touch me! This is illegal!”
Julian looked at my phone screen, his jaw clenching as he saw the live server logs. “You accessed my private terminal?” he asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief. “I gave you my office keycard yesterday because you said you wanted to leave a surprise on my desk…”
“Julian, listen to me!” Chloe pleaded, stepping back as security closed in. “I love you! I was forced to do it! They threatened me!”
“Who threatened you?” I demanded, walking toward her with measured, deliberate steps. “Was it Apex Global? They’ve been trying to buy our source code for two years.”
Chloe snapped her mouth shut, but the flicker of terror in her eyes confirmed my suspicion. Apex Global was our fiercest rival, and their CEO was notorious for playing dirty. They couldn’t out-innovate us, so they had sent a trojan horse directly into my brother’s life.
“Check her bag,” I ordered the head of security.
“You can’t do that without a warrant!” Chloe shrieked, backing against a decorative pillar.
“This is private property, and you just committed a federal corporate espionage crime on our servers,” I replied coldly. “We have full legal authority to hold you until the FBI arrives.”
The security officer firmly grabbed her purse and unzipped it. Inside, wrapped in a velvet pouch, was an encrypted high-speed flash drive, actively downloading data via a local wireless bridge connected to our internal mainframe.
Julian stared at the drive, looking utterly sickened. He had fallen for her charm, brought her into his life, and personally recommended her for the marketing position, completely unaware that he was being played from day one. He stepped up beside me, his face turning cold and resolute.
“I thought you actually cared about me,” Julian said, his voice flat and empty. “You used me.”
“Julian, please!” Chloe sobbed, dropping all her previous arrogance as tears ruined her makeup. “It was just business! They offered me half a million dollars! I was going to leave the country today! Please don’t ruin my life!”
“You ruined your own life the second you stepped into this building with bad intentions,” I told her firmly. “And your little power trip with the coffee? That was your fatal mistake. If you had just kept your head down, you might have walked out of here with our data. But your vanity got the better of you.”
Ten minutes later, two local police officers alongside corporate fraud investigators arrived in the lobby. The entire office watched in complete silence as Chloe was placed in handcuffs. The confidence and cruelty she had displayed just half an hour ago were completely gone, replaced by hyperventilating sobs as she was escorted out the front doors into a waiting squad car.
Once the lobby cleared and the employees slowly returned to their desks, Julian turned to me, looking visibly drained.
“I’m so sorry, Kat,” he muttered, looking down at the floor. “I was blind. I brought a spy right into our core system, and I let her disrespect you.”
“You made a mistake by trusting the wrong person,” I said, putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “It happens to the best of us. But next time you start dating someone, bring her to dinner with me first.”
Julian let out a weak, emotional laugh, nodding in agreement. “Deal. Absolutely.”
I looked down at my ruined silk blouse, the dark coffee stain now cold against my skin. I smiled slightly, taking a deep breath of relief. It was a expensive shirt, but exposing a corporate spy and saving our family business was worth every single drop.
