I turned my eyes toward Chairman Vance, my heart suddenly hammering against my ribs. “What are you talking about?”
Vance handed me a yellowed document pulled from the bottom of his folder. “When your father died in that car accident five years ago, the police ruled it a mechanical failure. But when our forensic team unlocked Julian’s encrypted server to process the asset freeze tonight, they uncovered emails dated a week before the crash. Julian had been communicating with an unlicensed mechanic in Brooklyn.”
The room went deathly silent. The surrounding guests, who had been whispering amongst themselves, froze in place. Julian, still on his knees, stopped crying. His eyes locked onto mine, filled with a sudden, dark terror that confirmed everything before he even spoke.
“No… Evelyn, no!” Julian screamed, trying to scramble backward on his hands and knees. “I didn’t! It wasn’t like that! They promised me it would just look like an accident! I needed the trust funds unlocked! Your father wouldn’t transfer control to me while he was alive!”
The horror hit me like a physical blow. Five years of grief, five years of living with the man who had ordered the hit on my own father, playing the quiet, supportive wife while he built his empire on my family’s blood. The betrayal I felt earlier over his mistress was nothing compared to the burning, absolute fury that ignited in my chest.
Two lead detectives from the NYPD Major Case Squad pushed through the security guards, handcuffs already drawn.
“Julian Mercer,” the lead detective announced, his voice booming across the grand room. “You are under arrest for first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent.”
Julian shrieked like a wild animal as the steel cuffs snapped shut around his wrists. He thrashed against the officers, his expensive tuxedo tearing at the shoulder. “Chloe! Help me! Call my lawyers!”
Chloe shrank back into the crowd, completely disowning him. “I don’t know him! I was just his assistant! I had nothing to do with any of this!”
“Save it for the grand jury, lady,” the second detective said, grabbing Chloe’s arm and putting her in handcuffs as well. “You’re named as a co-conspirator in the offshore tax fraud schemes.”
Julian’s mother fell to her knees, sobbing hysteric pleas for mercy, but no one in the room looked at her with anything other than utter disgust. The very elites who had laughed at me moments ago were now bowing their heads, stepping back in absolute awe and terror as the officers hauled Julian and Chloe toward the front doors.
As Julian was being dragged past me, he looked up, tears and sweat ruining his face. “Evelyn! Please! I loved you! Don’t do this to me! Give me one more chance!”
I looked down at him, standing tall in the center of the ballroom. “You wanted me to remember who actually matters in this family, Julian? Now you know.”
The heavy glass doors slammed shut as the police hauled him into the night. The sound of sirens echoed down the avenue, fading into the Manhattan distance.
Chairman Vance stepped up beside me, handing me a silver fountain pen and a new set of corporate governance papers. “The board is assembled on the top floor, Mrs. Mercer. They are waiting for their true CEO.”
I took the pen, signed my name across the executive line, and walked out of the ballroom without looking back once. The dynasty my father built was finally back in the hands of its rightful owner, and Julian Mercer would spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars.
