The name echoed through the cavernous room like a thunderclap. Julian froze completely, his eyes locked onto mine as if trying to process a language he had never heard before.
“Dominic?” Julian gasped out, his voice barely a breath. “No… Dominic is in Singapore. He has nothing to do with the company.”
“Dominic was in Singapore until six months ago,” I said, looking down at him with a sense of clarity I hadn’t felt in years. “Until he realized that you were planning to liquidate the family’s core holding assets and flee the country with what you thought was my inheritance. Dominic didn’t want to save me, Julian. He wanted the empire for himself.”
The live feed on the giant screen shifted. The tactical team in Julian’s private home vault held up the black encryption drive to the camera. That drive contained every off-the-books transaction, every altered contract, and every bribe Julian had paid to secure his position as head of the firm over the past five years.
“When Chloe approached you seven months ago,” I continued, turning toward the silent crowd, “she was hired by Dominic to plant spyware on your personal server. But Chloe is a professional. She realized very quickly that playing both sides would yield a much higher payout. So, she took Dominic’s money to spy on you, took your money to steal from me, and planned to disappear the moment you made your grand announcement tonight.”
Chloe sneered, her hands cuffed securely behind her back by the federal agents. “He was an easy mark, Clara. Arrogant, greedy, and so desperate to prove he was better than your father that he fell for every single trick in the book. The fake doctor visits, the fake morning sickness… he paid for all of it.”
Julian looked between Chloe and the screen, his chest heaving as the reality of his total destruction set in. The reputation he had carefully built, the wealth he had stolen, and the power he had craved were all evaporating in front of two hundred of the most influential people in the city.
“Clara, please,” Julian begged, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered as he dropped to his knees on the carpeted stage. “We can fix this. I was tricked! She manipulated me! I love you, Clara. Everything I did, I did to build a future for us!”
I looked at the man I had spent seven years of my life supporting. I remembered the endless nights I had stayed up helping him prepare his board presentations, the sacrifices I had made to keep his public image flawless, and the cruel smirk he had given me just ten minutes ago when he kissed Chloe in front of everyone.
“You didn’t do any of this for us, Julian,” I said quietly, my voice carrying clearly over the microphone. “You did it because you couldn’t stand living in my family’s shadow. But you forgot one simple detail.”
I reached into my evening bag and pulled out a single folder, throwing it down onto the floor right in front of his knees.
“My father didn’t leave his estate to me in a standard trust,” I said, leaning in close so only he could hear the final blow. “He made me the sole executive trustee with absolute authority to void any marital property agreements in the event of financial fraud. Forty-eight hours ago, I executed that clause. Every bank account, every piece of real estate, every vehicle, and every stock option bearing your name has already been frozen and transferred back to the core estate.”
Julian stared at the documents, his face contorted in shock. “I have nothing?”
“You have a public trial and a very long prison sentence,” I replied.
The federal agents pulled Julian to his feet. He tried to speak, to yell, to plead, but no sound came out. The guests watched in stunned silence as Julian and Chloe were led down the center aisle of the ballroom, surrounded by armed officers, while cameras flashed from every corner of the room.
Marcus walked up to the edge of the stage and offered me his arm. “The press is waiting outside, Clara. The board has already called an emergency meeting for nine o’clock tomorrow morning to confirm your appointment as CEO.”
I took a deep breath, smoothing down the front of my evening gown. I looked out over the crowded ballroom one last time. The pity that had filled the room earlier was gone, replaced by undeniable respect and awe.
“Let them wait a few minutes longer, Marcus,” I said, handing the microphone back to the event coordinator with a calm, gentle smile. “I want to enjoy the rest of the music.”
I stepped off the stage, holding my head high, leaving the ruins of Julian’s ambition behind me forever.
