My father reached into his suit jacket with trembling fingers, pulling out a sealed white envelope that one of Julian’s guards had shoved into his pocket moments before the grand entry. With shaking hands, he tore it open. As his eyes scanned the official DNA test and legal documents inside, the last remaining color drained from his face. He looked up at Julian, his jaw working silently, unable to form words.
“You thought you buried the past twenty years ago,” Julian spoke softly, his grip around me tightening in protective warmth. “You framed my father, ruined my family, and forced my mother into hiding just so you could usurp the family estate. Then, to secure your control over the legacy, you forced her sister—my aunt—into a loveless marriage, stole her fortune, and treated her daughter like trash after she died.”
The entire ballroom was frozen in shock. My relatives stood like statues, realizing that the man they had mocked and abused for decades was actually standing on top of a mountain of stolen wealth. My brother tried to slip out through the side exit, but two of Julian’s security guards stepped into his path, blocking him effortlessly.
“You called her a failure,” Julian continued, his voice ringing with cold authority. “Yet while you were spending her mother’s inheritance on lavish weddings and failed investments, she was secretly finishing her degree, managing the real board of directors behind your back, and signing off on every single contract that kept your dying company afloat.”
I rested my head against Julian’s shoulder. It was true. Over the past three years, working alongside Julian under an alias, I had quietly dismantled my father’s hold over the family enterprise. I didn’t just want revenge; I wanted justice for my mother, who had suffered in silence until her last breath.
My father fell completely flat on his face, sobbing uncontrollably. “Please… Maya, my daughter… tell him to stop! I am your father! I gave you life!”
I looked down at the man who had hit me, who had spent my entire life belittling my existence and treating me as an unwanted burden.
“You gave me nothing but pain, Arthur,” I said, my voice steady and free of fear for the first time in my life. “My mother gave me strength, and Julian gave me a future. You are no father to me.”
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling my father up by his arms and locking steel handcuffs around his wrists. He kicked and screamed as they dragged him down the aisle, his pathetic cries echoing off the high ceilings. Right behind him, two other officers escorted my brother away for complicity in financial fraud.
The remaining guests stood in terrified silence, staring at the floor, terrified to make eye contact with either of us. The cruel laughter from earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a heavy, suffocating shame.
Julian looked around the room, his icy demeanor returning for a brief moment. “Every person in this room who took joy in her pain will receive a formal notice tomorrow. Your accounts will be audited, and your business ties with Vance Enterprises are permanently severed.”
Gasps of panic erupted throughout the hall, but Julian didn’t wait to hear their pleas. He turned around, carrying me gently in his arms as his guards cleared a path through the crowd.
We stepped out into the crisp evening air, leaving behind the wreckage of my past. As he set me down carefully in the backseat of his car, he wrapped his jacket around my shoulders and cupped my cheek gently, wiping away a stray tear.
“It’s over now, Maya,” he whispered softly, his eyes filled with warmth and devotion. “They can never hurt you again.”
I looked into his eyes and smiled, feeling the heavy weight on my chest finally lift away forever. My past was broken, but my life was finally my own.
